It’s a story that’s been told for decades in Canada.
In 1972, the federal government gave $2.5 million to the B.C. Wildlife Federation to help with conservation efforts.
It was a gesture of goodwill that helped create a national conservation framework.
But in the 20 years since, the organization has suffered from a lack of funding and the polar bear population has dwindled by more than 90 per cent.
“We need to protect the habitat, but we also need to have access to the land and to the water to get to that habitat,” said Paul Schott, the federation’s executive director.
“It’s time to go back to that old formula of how to get the land to bear.”
It’s also time to start thinking about the bears that exist on the planet today.
The polar bear is one of the most vulnerable creatures on Earth, and a keystone species in ecosystems around the world.
The bears that survive and breed on the ground and in the water are the ones that we rely on to fuel our economy, food production, commerce and even our lives.
It’s why a lot of species are looking to the polar bears as their last refuge, according to scientists.
But what’s happened over the past 50 years is polar bears are becoming more isolated.
As the polar ice melts, the species has lost the ability to breed and it has become less able to migrate, meaning there’s less space to move around.
This means it is less able move into new areas.
“This is a very critical point because polar bears, in their environment, they’re the last of the big predators,” said Peter Meeus, professor of ecology at the University of Alberta.
“Their habitat is gone.
It doesn’t just affect the polar animals, it affects us.”
Meees said that if we’re going to keep polar bears in a sustainable situation, we need to think about the ecosystem that they inhabit.
“The more polar bears we have, the less likely we are to see them in a habitat that’s going to provide them with that habitat and that food source,” he said.
“So, we really need to understand how they’ve been degraded.”
A polar bear on ice Meeaus said that we can help polar bears by rethinking how we manage polar bears on the ice.
“If we can reduce their habitat loss and we can get them out of the cold and out of their own wintering sites, then we’re not going to have to worry about them moving into areas that are less suitable for them,” he explained.
“They can move into areas where they can thrive.”
But that won’t necessarily be the case for everyone.
“When we look at how the population is decreasing, it’s more likely that the species is declining because the species can’t migrate in areas that were previously suitable for it,” said Schott.
“And so we’re really looking at a very complex system, a very dynamic system, and if we don’t understand how it’s all working, we’re very, very vulnerable.”
But the fact is, polar bears can’t go anywhere.
The animals are too isolated and they’re too small to survive in places like the Arctic.
And they are going to remain isolated because the habitat they’re found on is gone, Schott said.
And while it’s easy to blame climate change for the loss of polar bears habitat, there’s a real danger of the species becoming extinct too.
“Climate change is a factor,” he added.
“But I would argue it’s not the only factor.”
Schott believes we need a new model of how we are going about managing polar bears.
He thinks we should start thinking of the animals as a resource.
“Our goal is to find new habitats that can sustain the species for the long term, and we need some kind of management that can be sustainable for the species,” he told CBC News.
“What we need is to think more about how the ecosystem will sustain the ecosystem and the animals and that means we need new approaches.”
But to get there, we have to look beyond the polar environment.
“One of the things that’s missing is the ability of polar bear to migrate and that’s what we’re trying to figure out in a new way,” Schott continued.

Now we have a much better understanding of the polar system, so we can do some really smart things to try to conserve the species.”
